The aim of this research is to achieve a better understanding of the processes underlying knowledge transfer (KT) in Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). The paper addresses: first, the extent of SSH research groups' engagement in KT and the formal KT activities used to interact with non-academic communities; and second, how the characteristics of research groups may influence engagement in various types of KT. The empirical analysis is at research group level using data derived from a questionnaire of SSH research groups conducted by the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). We find that KT activities are based on relational rather than commercial activities. The most frequent relational activities in which SSH research groups engage are consultancy and contract research, with personnel mobility a marginal activity. We find also that the characteristics of research groups (e.g. size and multidisciplinarity) and individuals (e.g. status and research impact) are associated with involvement in KT activities and that a deliberate focus on the societal impacts and relevance of the research conducted is strongly related to active engagement of research groups in all the modes of KT considered in this study. From a managerial perspective, our findings suggest that measures promoting a focus on the societal impact of research could enhance research groups' engagement in KT activities.

Resumo O presente trabalho tem por objetivo investigar como as percepções dos grupos de pesquisa acadêmica sobre resultados, benefícios e dificuldades esperados das interações influenciam o número de interações que eles realizam com empresas, com base em um survey sobre as relações universidade-empresa no Brasil. Para tanto, por meio da Teoria de Resposta ao Item não Paramétrico (TRIN), foram criados agrupamentos não ad hoc a partir de padrões de resposta de pesquisadores para as percepções analisadas. A partir dos agrupamentos, foi estimado um modelo para identificar como essas percepções influenciam o número de interações dos grupos. Society's growing demand for knowledge transfer from higher education institutions to firms through academics is a notable trend. Nonetheless, the nuances of how business school academics perceive their engagement in knowledge transfer to firms remain inadequately explored. This research endeavors to bridge this knowledge gap by drawing upon interviews conducted with 52 business school academics in Ghana. The synthesized findings derived from the interpretive phenomenological data analysis provide crucial insights grounded in the ability–motivation–opportunity theory framework. Within this framework, “opportunity” describes image‐ and project‐opportunity context drivers, such as media engagement, goodwill, in‐service training students, and projects by international development organizations fostered through relationship‐building and networking. “Motivation” explains the established national, societal, and self‐serving mandates, stimulating institutional‐, society‐, and person‐driven motivations. “Ability” encompasses the capacity of academics to employ both generic and relational mechanisms. The interplay among ability, motivation, and opportunity catalyzes the creation of various knowledge content types linked to specific market contexts.
