“…The sarcophagi were most likely moved during the renovations at the Cathedral in 1842–43 and as a result of Gaetano Beccani’s plans at that time for the enlargement of the Piazza del Duomo. Smith, 2000b, illustrates the sarcophagi immured at the Canonica. The earliest in date of the three, the Psychopompos Sarcophagus (now in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo), is relatively unworn, suggesting a history for this tomb different from that of the other two, although it has been paired as a twin with the Marriage Sarcophagus (also in the Duomo museum) from their placement flanking the south doors of the Baptistry in the nineteenth century.…”

“…2079: the document states that no one can be buried within the Cathedral without the express consent of the operai and the Consuls of the Wool Guild. For a documentation and discussion of the claiming of the spaces around the Cathedral in order to create a piazza around the new structure, see Haines, 1997; Smith, 2000b. Del Migliore, 38, mentions that there was an attempt to clear the space in 1340, but there is no known archival source that supports this claim.…”
