Fuzzy Characterization of Flawed Metallic Plates With Eddy Current Tests

Abstract: Abstract-Eddy Current Techniques (ECT) for Non-DestructiveTesting and Evaluation (NDT/NDE) of conducting materials is one of the most application-oriented field of research within electromagnetism. In this work, a novel approach is proposed in order to characterize defects on metallic plates in terms of their depth and shape, starting from a set of experimental measurements. The problem is solved by means of a hybrid classification system based on Computation with Words (CWs) and Fuzzy Entropy (FE). They extra… Show more

“…There are a variety of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques employed in industries, such as magnetic particle inspection (MPI), electromagnetic methods (EM), eddy current methods, and ultrasonic methods [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Due to its advantages of having good penetration depth and mechanical flexibility, the piezoelectric ultrasonic method is widely used for thickness measurement, flaw evaluation, and material characterization [8][9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…However, these preliminary experimental results only enable to assess the effects of the metallization ageing. The actual ageing state evaluation requires one i) to develop an accurate modeling tool of the interactions between the EC probe/power module [14,15] and ii) to solve the inverse problem so as to estimate the value of the metallization conductivity starting from the collected EC data.…”

“…So it is never immediate to characterize defect from the obtained EC data. As a consequence and since only EC data obtained at the surface of the inspected media are available, the associated inverse problem is actually "ill-posed" [2,4], i.e., the solution of the problem may not be unique or even not exist.…”

“…So to elaborate a quantitative EC imaging technique in spite of these strong limitations, it is firstly necessary to dispose a 3D modeling of the EC interactions, which is both accurate and computationally efficient, so that the solving of the inverse problem can be made possible [2,5].…”
