Future Generation 5G Wireless Networks for Smart Grid: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Wireless cellular networks are emerging to take a strong stand in attempts to achieve pervasive large scale obtainment, communication, and processing with the evolution of the fifth generation (5G) network. Both the present day cellular technologies and the evolving new age 5G are considered to be advantageous for the smart grid. The 5G networks exhibit relevant services for critical and timely applications for greater aspects in the smart grid. In the present day electricity markets, 5G provides new business … Show more

“…The present power system infrastructure involves connections of all significant power system operational facilities (generating, transmission, and primary distribution substation) to the system control center, part of a conventional power system [151,152]. However, this communication is extended throughout distribution networks and offers high-speed two-ways communication flows that make the SG dynamic interactive for real-time information exchange [153][154][155]. SG employs ICT technology at each level of the power system right from generation down to consumer appliances to improve electric power services, grid reliability and efficiency, cost reduction, and enhanced environmental-friendliness.…”

“…They propose integrating existing services into modern ICT platforms to provide new services to citizens and energy users. Moreover, the authors provide a thorough examination of wireless technologies and 5G communication for smart grids and future roadmaps and challenges in [35]. The intelligent grid consists of three main elements, i.e., distributed energy management, automated infrastructure inspection, and remote monitoring within the utility industry.…”

“…With all the discussion above, it becomes apparent that fifth generation (5G) wireless networks might become a solution to the issues such as the intermittency of the renewable energy generation and the effective control over energy efficiency and saving (Dragičević et al, 2019;Nižetić et al, 2019;Zahed et al, 2020). Even now, at their infancy, it is expected that 5G networks are going to contribute trillions to the global economy by creating the conditions for new advances in productivity and innovation (Khan et al, 2019;Forge and Vu, 2020).…”
