Fusion power: a challenge for materials science

Abstract: The selection and design of materials that will withstand the extreme conditions of a fusion power plant has been described as one of the greatest materials science challenges in history. The high particle flux, high thermal load, thermal mechanical stress and the production of transmutation elements combine to produce a uniquely hostile environment. In this paper, the materials favoured for the diverse roles in a fusion power plant are discussed, along with the experimental and modelling techniques that are u… Show more

“…Defect processes also play a crucial role in battery and fuel cell materials; closely related is the modelling of intercalation which is of major importance in battery technologies. And defects processes are of central importance in radiation damage as discussed in the article of Duffy (2010). -Surface properties including modelling of surface structures, defects and impurities and molecular adsorption and reaction, which are again of major importance in the performance of materials in energy generating or storage devices.…”

“…Two key designs for fusion-based energy are magnetic and inertial confinement. A number of materials challenges need to be addressed [36][37][38]. We have discussed some aspects of the first wall; here, we discuss selecting materials for liquid-fusion blankets.…”
