Further studies on the use of mixed feeding schedules with plant- and animal-based diets for common carp Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus)

Abstract: A growth trial was conducted on common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.) fry in cement tanks for 100 days in order to test the efficacy of mixed feeding schedules. The diets tested were a fishmeal-based diet (diet D with 30.9% protein) and three Colocasia esculenta-based diets (diet A with 16.7% protein, diet B with 19.7% protein and diet C with 25.8% protein) separately and in three mixed feeding combinations of diet A, B and C with D on alternate 2 days (2A/2D, 2B/2D and 2C/2D, where the numeral indicates the number… Show more

“…A similar finding was also reported with common carp (Nandeesha et al 1993, 2002, Srikanth et al 1989) and sutchi catfish (Ali et al 2005). This might be a result of the lower energy content of diet A or higher energy content of diet B as reported by Nandeesha et al (2002).…”

“…Plant based feeds significantly raises the protein and fat levels in the carcass composition of major carps (Nandeesha et al 1995). Both animal and plant based diets lower the moisture level (Nandeesha et al 2002) and do not show prominent effects on ash contents (Garg et al 2002). In Atlantic cod, phosphorus supplementation in plant protein based diets could replace 50% dietary FM without growth impairment (Albrektsen et al 2006).…”
