Abstract-In this paper, an approximate maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver for differential space-time block codes is investigated. The receiver is derived from the ML criterion and is shown to mitigate error floor occurring in a conventional differential receiver very well. Because the receiver employs knowledges of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and fading rate, we study mismatched cases when these parameters are not accurate. It is shown that the receiver is more sensitive to the mismatched parameters when the fading rate is high. Then, a union bound on the bit error probability is derived. The bounds show good agreement with the simulation results at high fading rate and at high SNR. Finally, a modified receiver, denoted as multistage receiver, is proposed to compensate the so-called intrablock interference caused by the time-varying characteristic of the channel within a transmission block. The multistage receiver offers further reduction of error floor of about half order of magnitude as compared with an approximate ML receiver.Index Terms-Bit error probability, differential space-time block codes, maximum-likelihood receiver.

In this paper we propose the combination of space-time diversity techniques and signal space diversity, in order to improve communication system performance. Specifically, we use prior knowledge of the channel behavior to design a mapping algorithm to generate a two-dimensional constellation with the same number of symbols as MPSK constellations currently used in coherent space time block coding applications, to demonstrate that superior performance can be achieved. This is accomplished by constructing a two-dimensional map that results from the minimization of the estimated symbol error probability when transmission occurs in a fading environment. System performance for each each mapping is assessed in quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels.

Abstract-We consider multiple-symbol differential detection (MSDD) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleighfading channels. MSDD, which jointly processes blocks of AE received symbols to detect AE ½ data symbols, allows for power-efficient transmission over rapid-fading channels. However, the complexity of the straightforward approach to find the maximum-likelihood (ML) MSDD solution is exponential in AE , the number of transmit antennas AEÌ and the rate Ê. In this paper, we introduce an MSDD algorithm based on sphere decoding whose average complexity is not exponential in AE for interesting ranges of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and aribtrary unitary signal constellations. For the interesting special cases of diagonal and orthogonal constellations we achieve a similar complexity reduction in AEÌ and Ê. Based on an error-rate analysis for MSDD we also propose a variant of MSDD that considerably improves power efficiency in relatively fast fading at a very moderate increase in complexity.
