Furin Protease: From SARS CoV-2 to Anthrax, Diabetes, and Hypertension

Abstract: An improved understanding of the implications of race on body satisfaction might optimize the weight loss process and quality of life in women with obesity. The findings of this study increased understanding of body satisfaction in women with obesity and have implications for addressing psychosocial factors within weight loss treatments across racial and at-risk groups. 24 Physicians' Views on a Wellbeing Course Gifted to Them: A Qualitative Study. Patricia Lynn Dobkin; Camila Velez Given concerns about staff … Show more

“…For example, elevated furin expression negatively correlates with disease outcome in several cancers, increasing metastasis while reducing immune-cell infiltration [ 1 , 37 , 43 , 44 ]. Bioinformatic analyses identified FURIN polymorphisms as risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and all-cause mortality [ 45 , 46 , 47 ]. Importantly, these furin-associated risk factors, together with furin’s key role in SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis (as described below), may underpin the increased vulnerability of susceptible patients (including obese and diabetic patients) to negative outcomes from COVID-19 [ 48 , 49 ].…”

“…This cleavage allows the virus to shed the spike protein and enter the host cell. The use of the protease is thought to be a key component of the pathogenicity of many viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 infection ( Coutard et al, 2020 ; Fitzgerald, 2020 ). Of the known pathogenic beta coronaviruses, only the SARS-CoV2, MERS-CoV, and HCoV-OC43 viruses possess the FURIN cleavage complex motif.…”

“…That is why furin can cleave the S protein in the Golgi complex and in the extracellular space [54]. The increased activity of furin in case of comorbidities such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes mellitus is probably one of the causes of the severe course of COVID-19 [55]. Furin convertase inhibitors-chloromethyl ketone and peptidyl chlromethyl ketones-are the promising agents for treating COVID-19 [56].…”
