Fungal Resistance of Loblolly Pine Reacted with Methyl or Phenyl Isothiocyanate

Abstract: Pine sapwood reacted with methyl or phenyl isothiocyanate to form bonded methyl or phenyl thiocarbamate in situ resisted attack by the brown-rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum. Wood reacted with methyl isothiocyanate to 7.2 percent chemical weight gain (99 mmol/100 g wood) and phenyl isothiocyanate to 6.8 percent chemical weight gain (50 mmol/100 g wood) had 0.2 percent and 2.9 pcrcent weight loss, respectively, in a Standard 12-weck soil-block decay lest. Methyl-isothiocyanate-modified wood lost 12 percent of th… Show more

“…This was attributed to the lability of the sulfonate ester bond, which was hydrolyzed readily during fungal degradation. A similar result from a previous study showed that wood reacted with tosyl Chloride lost 23 % of the sulfonate ester groups during the 12-week decay test (Chen 1992b). Less chemical was lost from wood reacted with epichlorohydrin than from wood crosslinked with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate during the same 12-week decay test.…”

“…Tosylation pre-treatment provides binding of tosyl groups to wood cell wall polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) thorough ester bonds (Chen 1991). This pre-treatment increases the hydrophobicity of wood by shielding hydroxyl groups and promotes further impregnation of hydrophobic molecules in the second step (Ermeydan et al 2012(Ermeydan et al , 2014.…”
