Functions of Chitosan-Ferulic Acid Salt for Prevention of Hypertension

Abstract: on hypertensive rats were tested. In rats given a diet containing CS-FA or FA, elevation of systolic blood pressure was suppressed compared to the control diet group, but no difference in food intake or body weight was observed between groups.

“…We have previously reported that a weak acid salt of α-CS adsorbs bile acids through electrostatic interactions and that oral administration of the salt reduces serum cholesterol levels in rats [10] [11]. We have also shown that a polymer matrix containing α-CS salt adsorbs bile acids by the same mechanism [12].…”

“…85 CH/SA gel beads have been developed to facilitate the intake of FeA by animals (e.g., rats). 86 To achieve this goal, CH/SA beads were prepared by dispersing CH in SA solutions under stirring conditions. This solution was added dropwise into a CaCl 2 solution and left to react for 1 h at room temperature.…”

“…CH/FeA salts have been obtained in the form of powder. 86 The pharmacological action of these salts was studied as such and also after being incorporated into calcium-induced alginate beads or pectin beads. These powders were formulated containing different ratios of CH and FeA by placing them in distilled water.…”

“…The HPLC system had an LC-6A pump (Shimadzu Co., Kyoto), a packed column (150 mm × 4.6 mm; Cosmosil 5C 18 -MS-II; Nacalai Tesque, Kyoto), and a SPD-6A UV detector (Shimadzu Co.). For determination of FA, HPLC was conducted at an ambient temperature using an eluent containing 10 mmol/L phosphate buffer (pH 4.7) and methanol (8:2) at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min [20]. The detector wavelength was set as 260 nm, and an eluent comprising 0.1% citric acid and acetonitrile (87:13) was used to quantify CA; the detector wavelength was then set to 280 nm [21].…”
