Functionalization at the double bond region of jojoba oil. 6. Production of aminesvia azides

Abstract: The apolar and hydrophobic jojoba molecule was made more hydrophilic by the incorporation of primary amino groupsvia the introduction and subsequent reduction of azido groups. The azides were obtained by the substitution of bromine or a mesylate group introduced into the jojoba oil molecule; by opening of the epoxide ring in epoxy jojoba; or by the addition of bromoazide to the double bonds of jojoba.

“…Allylic amination of the bromo derivatives of jojoba was carried out with hexamethylene tetraamine as previously reported (11). 1 H NMR and IR spectra of the products (J-2NH 2 and J-4NH 2 ) were in accordance with published spectra (11).…”

“…We assume that this phenomenon is related to the number of amino groups in the product. The tetraamino derivative (J-4NH 2 ) was more hydrophilic than J-2NH 2 (11) and, therefore, the resulting membrane (J4NP1), which contained more −NH 2 groups, was more hydrophilic than J2NP1.…”

“…This can be achieved by introducing protic groups, such as hydroxyl and amino substituents, along the chain. Products containing these groups, either as tetrahydroxy-or tetraamino-jojoba derivatives, or as dihydroxy diamino-jojoba derivatives have been synthesized, and their solubilities in methanol are better than that of the underivatized wax (3). These compounds are slightly soluble in water but still exhibit good solubility in hydrocarbon solvents and ether.…”
