Functional Visual Acuity

Abstract: Dry eye (DE) causes irregularity of the ocular surface and reduces the quality of vision. An intact, regular tear film is essential for high-quality retinal images; however, visual tasks requiring sustained gazing can disrupt the tear film, eventually degrading visual function. A functional visual acuity (FVA) measurement system has been uniquely developed in Japan to evaluate visual function related to tear stability in patients with DE. FVA has been shown to correlate with optical quality. The system measure… Show more

“…We used the FVA measurement system (AS-28, KOWA, Aichi, Japan), previously reported by Kaido et al to measure the FVA. 30,31 FVA was measured monocularly with best spectacle correction under photopic conditions and natural blinking during a 60-second period. The outcomes assessed were the baseline visual acuity (VA), FVA, visual maintenance ratio (VMR), and blink frequency.…”

“…The lower amount of eye drops used in this period might account for an increased tear film stability and thus the visual acuity improvement. 30 To conclude, IOP control by successful CLASS may result in stability of RNFL thickness after CLASS surgery in the investigated period, while a significant IOPreduction was achieved at 12 months postoperatively. Limitation of our study is the relatively small number of patients enrolled.…”

“…The efficacy endpoints consisted of visual acuity (VA), [26] contrast sensitivity (CS), [27] and glare sensitivity (GS). [28] All these endpoints were measured before and after 4-month treatment.…”
