Functional traits of the world’s late Quaternary large-bodied avian and mammalian herbivores

Abstract: Prehistoric and recent extinctions of large-bodied terrestrial herbivores had significant and lasting impacts on Earth’s ecosystems due to the loss of their distinct trait combinations. The world’s surviving large-bodied avian and mammalian herbivores remain among the most threatened taxa. As such, a greater understanding of the ecological impacts of large herbivore losses is increasingly important. “…To test whether this was the case, we consider whether continental changes in fire activity in grassy ecosystems (i) were related to grazer extinction severity, (ii) were also related to the loss of other traits related to biomass consumption (i.e., body size and digestive efficiency), and (iii) were unrelated to variation in browser extinction severity, indicating that herbivore-driven changes in grass-fueled fires can be attributed exclusively to grazing communities. To quantify extinction severity, we used a list of 302 extant and extinct late Quaternary mammalian herbivore species recorded over the past 130 thousand years (kyr) derived from the HerbiTraits database ( 23 ) to estimate the continental severity of extinction of grazers, browsers, megaherbivores, and nonruminants ( 24 ).
