Functional characterization of platelets in patients with arterial erectile dysfunction

Abstract: SUMMARYArterial erectile dysfunction (ED) is commonly associated with classic cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidaemia and obesity. However, some patients with arterial ED do not present any cardiovascular risk factor. As mean platelet volume (MPV) has been shown to be directly related to the cardiovascular risk and the percentage of platelets expressing the vitronectin receptor (aVb3), involved in the early stages of platelet adhesion, is highe… Show more

“…MPV can be examined in patient with erectile dysfunction because large platelets may be an indicator of the peripheral artery disease and vascular ED. Because MPV is a marker of platelet size that is easily measured by automated blood counters and routinely available at a relatively low cost (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(17)(18)(19).…”

“…According to this, those whose IIEF-ED score was < 26 were regarded to have ED. The patients were grouped according to their erectile function area scores (Q1-5 and Q15) as mild ED (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25), moderate ED (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) and severe ED (6)(7)(8)(9)(10). Penile color Doppler evaluation was conducted on the basis of the criteria proposed by La Vignera et al (16).…”

“…Platelets do not have nuclei (anucleated), they play role in atherosclerosis and inflammatory vascular response, and originate from megakaryocyes. 15 MPV and PDW are routinely measured parameters in complete blood count, and they are known as platelet activation markers. 16 MPV increased in ED, however no studies up to date have investigated the relation of PDW with ED.…”
