Fully sealed carbon nanotube flat-panel light source and its application as thin film transistor–liquid-crystal display backlight

Abstract: Study of high-brightness flat-panel lighting source using carbon-nanotube cathodeThe authors investigated a full sealed flat-panel light source, which is based on a triode structure with a metal mesh gate electrode and uses a carbon nanotube cold cathode. It has a flat surface luminance distribution with good uniformity, a stable luminance of 12 000 cd/ m 2 , and a luminous efficiency that was measured to be 14.5 lm/ W. It also shows a high color rendering index of 88 and a wide optical emission spectrum. Furt… Show more

“…Fu et al [10] fabricated a spherical FE light bulb which achieved an emission current density as high as 300 mA/cm 2 and a luminous efficiency of 26.4 lm/W. Zhang et al [3] fabricated FE lighting tube with CNT film cathode which can reach a static brightness of 1.6 × 10 3 cd/m 2 . In Fig.…”

“…In this phenomenon, electrons can be drawn from high-aspect-ratio or low-work-function cathode materials under a high electric field. This phenomenon is used in a variety of applications such as display panels [2], flat panel displays (for producing backlight) [3], field emission lamps (FELs) [4], and X-ray tubes [5].…”

“…Compared with TE, FE is advantageous because electrons are emitted at room temperature (i.e., cold cathode) and FE current is voltage controllable; in addition, the low operating temperature in FE extends the cathode lifetime. FE cathodes are used in several applications such as display panels [4,5], flat panel displays for producing backlight [6,7], FE lamps [8][9][10][11][12], and X-ray tubes [13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…[9][10][11] The intrinsic FE of singlewalled CNTs was found to follow the Fowler-Nordheim ͑FN͒ theory, although adsorption effects induced nonlinearity in the FN ͑ln I / V 2 -1 / V͒ curves and produced current saturation phenomena. 9,12 Although the FE of multiwalled CNTs ͑MWCNTs͒ has been studied thoroughly, [5][6][7][8][13][14][15][16] the explanation of the deviation of their FE from FN theory is still controversial. [17][18][19] The details of the deviation of real FN curves from FN theory need to be properly explained for both practical and theoretical reasons.…”
