Fully Screen Printed Carbon Black-Only Thermocouple and the Corresponding Seebeck Coefficients

Abstract: This work presents a thermocouple that is fully screen printed and consists exclusively of carbon black conductors. Two different carbon black inks were printed to form a thermocouple, which has been characterized regarding its output voltage. For reference, each of the carbon black inks was used in combination with gold to form two further thermocouples. These have also been characterized and the output voltage used to predict the output of the associated thermocouple consisting of pure carbon black conductor… Show more

“…Some basic test results of operating the thermocouple at temperatures up to 180 °C can be seen in Figure 3 . It is worth noting at this point that many of the printable thermocouples found in the literature [ 51 , 52 , 53 ] exhibit sub-millivolt output voltages, which are more difficult to acquire using this thermocouple. The ambient temperature recorded during this testing is 19.8 °C.…”

“…The operating temperature was 63 °C suitable for visually detecting antibiotic susceptibility from cells culture in situ. Although their work uses the same ink and substrate that we are using, they use a single meander geometry compared to our double meander geometry which is the most suitable to achieve homogeneous heating over the effective area and it consumes less power than the other geometries [9,19,20].…”

“…Screen printing also includes more steps than inkjet printing which implies a more complex fabrication procedure. They also use a single meander shape compared to our double meander shape of which is the most suitable to achieve homogeneous heating over the effective area and it consumes less power than the other geometries [9,19,20].…”
