Full and Short Versions of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations and Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised

Abstract: Inadequate problem solving is associated with recidivism in sex offenders. However, the psychometric properties of two of the most widely used coping self-report questionnaires, the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, have not been established for outpatient sex offenders. Using structural equation modeling, the present study aims to contribute to an empirically based decision as to which version of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations or Social Prob… Show more

“…However, some scholars suggested potential improvements to the AOC, which contains two subscales-"distraction" (i.e., engaging in a substitute task) and "social diversion"(i.e., strategies that involve avoiding a stressful situation by seeking out others) (Endler, Parker, & Butcher, 1993;Skinner et al, 2003). For instance, Van Horn and Wilpert (2017) indicated that in a Dutch outpatient sex offender sample, a four-factor structure of the CISS, fit the data better than other factor solutions. Similarly, Han and colleagues (2009) found support for an English adaptation of the four-factor structure of CISS in a sample of US college students and Manshadi and colleagues (2020) found support for a Persian version in a sample of Iranian children with earthquake experience.…”

“…Эмоциональные характеристики определялись по Шкале личностной и ситуативной тревоги Спилбергера-Ханина [9] и Шкале депрессии Центра эпидемиологических исследований [10]. Поведенческие характеристики оценивались по методикам «Копинг-поведение в стрессовых ситуациях» [11], «Шкала оценки влияния мигрени на повседневную активность» [12], в ходе беседы с пациентом оценивались количество принимаемых обезболивающих препаратов и предпочитаемые способы преодоления головной боли.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to assess an individual's ability to find solutions to their problems in a manner that is consistent with desisting from crime (i.e., takes them away from risky situations and criminal behaviour). There is evidence that poor or a lack of problem-solving skills has been associated with general criminal activity, as well as recidivism in sexual offending JIPs (Hanson et al, 2007;van Horn & Wilpert, 2017). Further, Ingram and colleagues (1985) reported that of the 51 male JIPs in their sample, those who recidivated had significantly higher scores on the impulsive scale of the Problem Solving Inventory compared to JIPs who desisted.…”
