Energy consumption in kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is growing rapidly due to economic development with raised levels of population, urbanization and living standards. Fossil fuels are currently solely used to meet the energy requirements. The KSA government have planned to double its energy generating capacity (upto 120 GW) by 2032. About half of the electricity capacity of this targeted energy will come from renewable resources such as nuclear, wind, solar, waste-to-energy (WTE) etc. Natural zeolites are found abundantly in KSA at Jabal Shamah occurrence near Jeddah city, whose characteristics have never been investigated in energy related applications. This research aims to study the physical and chemical characteristics of natural zeolite in KSA and to review its potential utilization in selected WTE technologies and solar energy. The standard zeolite group of alumina-silicate minerals were found with the presence of other elements such as Na, Mg and K etc. A highly crystalline structure and thermal stability of natural zeolites together with unique ion exchange, adsorption properties, high surface area and porosity make them suitable in energy applications such as WTE and solar energy as an additive or catalyst. A simple solid-gas absorption system for storing solar energy in natural zeolites will be a cheap alternative method for KSA. In anaerobic digestion (AD), the dual characteristics of natural zeolite like Mordenite will increase the CH 4 production of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). Further investigations are recommended to study the technical, economical, and environmental feasibility of natural zeolite utilization in WTE technologies in KSA.

The globally increasing demand for plastics is causing the increase in plastic wastes landfill which has serious environmental harms. Demand for plastic is increasing but the petroleum reserves are depleting and as plastics are obtained from petroleum, converting waste plastic into liquid hydrocarbon fuel is most suitable option for the minimizing the plastic waste which will either landfilled. Using Pyrolysis process we can convert plastic waste into liquid hydrocarbon fuel as this fuel has matching characteristics with the fuels like diesel or petrol, the process of pyrolysis is considered for conversion. In this paper the pyrolysis process is reviewed for different types of plastics and the process parameters that can affect the final end product that are gaseous, oil and char. The main parameters of the process are temperatures, type of reactors, type of fluidizing gas, pressure, catalysts, residence time.

ABSTRACT:The vast application of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) in packaging, greenhouses, homes etc has led to its huge accumulation as a municipal solid waste with monumental health, economic and environmental consequences. Since these are non-biodegradable and their photodegradation occurs only over a very long period, their economic conversion to energy products through pyrolysis is the thrust of this study. LDPE sample collected from the University of Ilorin Community was thermally degraded in a pyrolyser at temperatures ranging from 203 -400 o C. The products of pyrolysis were in three (3) states of matter and both the liquid and solid products were analysed using FTIR to determine the functional groups and GC-MS for the hydrocarbons present in the products. For the GC-MS analysis, the peaks that had 90% above quality when compared with the compounds in the installed NIST11 library were reported. There were alkanes, alkenes, halogenated alkanes, and very few aromatics in the liquid product and, the hydrocarbons were observed to range between C10 -C27. The FTIR and GC-MS results show the potential of the oil obtained as renewable source of energy while that for residue shows its inherent energy content. The liquid product was refluxed over molecular sieve catalyst (US 2882244A) and the calorific value was found to increase from 13,974 kJ/kg to 15,815.52 kJ/kg and this is found to be comparable to the range for lignite and dry wood. © JASEM https://dx.doi.org/10. 4314/jasem.v21i6.20
