Fuchs-Sondheimer expression for the strain gauge coefficient of thin metallic films

For double-layer thin metallic films, general theoretical expressions for the longitudinal and transverse strain coefficients of electrical resistance are derived on the basis of the well-known Fuchs-Sondheimer theory. These expressions are expressed in terms of Poisson's ratio, temperature coefficient of resistance, conductivity, the electron scattering parameters a t the film surfaces and interface and dimensions of the film layers, as well as, Poisson's ratio of the substrate. The variation in the strain coefficients of electrical resistance of Au/Ag double-layer film is studied numerically, as a function of the film thickness. The results show that these coefficients exhibit size effects.Fur dunne Metall-Doppelschichten werden allgemeine theoretische Ausdrucke fur die longitudinalen und transversalen Spannungskoeffizienten des elektrischen Widerstands auf der Grundlage der wohlbekannten Fuchs-Sondheimer-Theorie abgeleitet. Diese Beziehungen werden mit dem Poissonverhaltnis, dem Temperaturkoeffizienten des Widerstands, der Leitfahigkeit und den Elektronenstreuparametern an den Oberflachen und Grenzflachen der Schicht und den Dimensionen der Schichten sowie mit dem Poissonverhaltnis des Substrats ausgedruckt. Die Anderung der Spannungskoeffizienten des Widerstands der Au/Ag-Doppelschicht wird numerisch als Funktion der Schichtdicke bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daI3 diese Koeffizienten Size-Effekte aufweisen.

On the basis of the Fuchs‐Sondheimer theory, a general theoretical expression for the temperature coefficient of the longitudinal (transverse) strain coefficient of electrical resistance of doublelayer thin metallic films is derived. The derivation is performed upon the assumption that the differential variation in the film resistance with strain is temperature independent. The scattering of the conduction electrons at the surfaces of the film is described by the well known Fuchs specularity parameter P. On the interfaces beside the parameter P, a parameter Q is introduced which characterizes the probability that the conduction electrons are refracted, according to the law of refraction. Numerical calculations are made for an Au/Ag double‐layer film. The calculations show that the coefficients exhibit size effects.

Role of Thermal Strains on the Strain Coefficients of Resistance of Double Layer Thin Metallic Films

General theoretical expressions for the strain coefficients of resistance of double laycr thin metallic films are derived, based on the well known Fuchs-Sondheimer theory for electrical conduction and taking into consideration the effect of thermal strains. The numerical computations arc carried out for double layer thin metallic film of Au/Ag deposited onto glass substrate. The results indicate that the introduction of the effect of thermal strains reduces the values of the strain coeflicients of resistance of double layer thin metallic films. Fur die Spannungskoeffizienten des Widerstands von dunnen metallischen Doppelschichten werden allgemeine theoretische Ausdriicke abgeleitet, die auf der wohlbekannten Fuchs-Sondheimer-Theorie fur elektrische Leitfahigkeit beruhen und die Einfliisse thermischer Spannung beriicksichtigen. Die numerischen Berechnungen werden fiir diinne Metall-Doppelschichten von Au/Ag auf Glassubstraten durchgefiihrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daB die Einfiihrung des Effekts thermischer Spannungen die G r o k der Spannungskoefizienten des Widerstands von diinnen Metall-Doppelschichten reduziert.
