Fruit regulates seasonal expression of flowering genes in alternate-bearing ‘Moncada’ mandarin

Abstract: These results suggest for the first time that fruit inhibits flowering by repressing CiFT and SOC1 expression in leaves of alternate-bearing citrus. Fruit also reduces CsAP1 expression in leaves, and the significant increase in leaf CsLFY expression from off trees in late February was associated with the onset of floral differentiation.

“…In this case of intense alternate bearing it is possible to enhance flowering after high bearing by foliar applications of urea (EL-OTMANI et al, 2004), paclobutrazol (MARTINEZ-FUENTES et al, 2013) and early fruit harvest (MUÑOZ-FAMBUENA et al, 2011). However, flowering excess can be reduced after low fruit yield through foliar sprays of gibberellic acid (40mg L -1 ) (GRAVINA, 2007).…”

“…Fruits retention on the plant or extension of fruit harvesting interval has been reported to reduce the final total number fruits on mandarin (Munoz-Fambuena et al, 2011). Hormonal factor and increased competition for nutrients as fruits grow have been reported to be the major cause of fruit number variation (Munoz-Fambuena et al, 2011). On the contrary, the increase in number of fruits on variety Manyire green from harvesting stage 2 to harvesting stage 3 was possibly due to its delayed fruit maturation coupled with an efficient photosynthesis.…”

“…Recently, changes in gene expression in response to fruit bearing have been reported in 'Murcott' (C. reticulata Blanco) (Shalom et al, 2012) -Fambuena et al, 2011), and satsuma mandarin (Nishikawa et al, 2012). In these genotypes, the levels of CiFT expression seem to be high in light-fruiting "off" trees and low in heavy-fruiting "on" trees during the floral inductive period.…”
