Frozen-section diagnosis in surgical pathology. A prospective analysis of 526 frozen sections

Abstract: Five hundred eighty-six consecutive frozen-section consultations performed during a I-year period were studied prospectively in order to assess the accuracy of the method and develop a quality control mechanism. The overall accuracy was 97.1%. The accuracy of the method with breast lesions was 97.9%. Specimens from the gastrointestinal tract and thyroid were incorrectly interpreted in 5% of the cases. The accuracy for lymph node specimens was 96.2%, with more than 50% consulted out of curiosity. The authors co… Show more

“…Frozen section examination has proved to be an accurate and reliable method (7,22,23). Sensitivity ranges from 91.7% to 97.9%, and specificity ranges from 89.5% to 100% (22)(23)(24)(25). In our study,s ensitivity and specificity was 100%.…”

“…Nevertheless, FS is regarded as an accurate means of diagnosis during surgery and often has a significant influence on the surgical operation being performed. The major indications for performing a FS are to obtain a diagnosis of a patho- (21)(22)(23), whereas others reflect specific tissue examined (19, 24 -28). The diagnostic agreement in our study is comparable to rates of agreement (92-100% accuracy) in several recently published telepathology studies of FS, permanent section, and cytological slides (2, 20, 29 -31).…”

“…This procedure serves the surgeon by providing the diagnosis, tissue recognition, extent of resection and thus helps in making the therapeutic decision (1). Many comparative studies regarding frozen and paraffin sections were extensively done to find out the reliability of frozen sections in the diagnosis of prostrate carcinoma, breast cancer, skin cancer, tumors of colon, gall bladder, kidney, head and neck neoplasm (2).…”
