Frontline ® immunochromatographic device for on-site urine testing of amphetamines: laboratory validation using authentic specimens

Abstract: SUMMARY.We evaluated a new test device for amphetamines and methamphetamines (Frontline , cut-off limit 300 ng/mL) using authentic clinical and forensic specimens. The device is based on immunochromatography and is dipped into urine and read visually by comparison with a colour scale after a few minutes. A total of 658 specimens were tested by comparing results of the screening procedure with established immunoassays. Discordant results were further investigated by gas chromatography± mass spectrometry or gas … Show more

“…Other early assays that used an immunochromatographic technique include those for the quantification of drugs in biological fluids (100), theophylline in whole blood (57), and mouse immunoglobulin (36). Over the past decade many immunochromatographic assays have been reported for the detection of infectious diseases (2-4, 8, 9, 13, 15-17, 21, 22, 27, 29, 37, 42, 59-61, 69, 74-76, 84, 94), cancer (35,72), cardiovascular problems (54,65,66,73), pancreatitis (43), and illicit drugs (7,95). Other promising areas for the use of such assays are drug monitoring (93), food safety (10), and veterinary medicine (45,50).…”

“…For example, tests are available for the detection of certain infectious diseases (17)(18)(19), cancer (20,21), cardiovascular problems (22)(23)(24), pancreatitis (25), and drugs of abuse (26,27). Other promising areas for use of such assays are drug monitoring (28), food safety (29), and veterinary medicine (30,31).…”

“…On-site test strip has been extensively used for many qualitative and semi-quantitative assays such as Aflatoxin B1 [10], hepatic disease [11], hormones, toxins, viruses, bacteria and parasitic antigens [9,[12][13][14] as well as drug abuse and protein markers [11,15] and so on.…”
