“…A combination of information from industry shipments and MIOTs could provide empirically grounded end‐use shares for a wide range of materials, countries, and years. Their application to (economy‐wide) MFA databases that cover up to almost all global countries and a wide range of materials (Plank et al., 2022; UNEP, 2016), could quantify the material consumption in different end‐use products or sectors at novel material and country resolution. This more comprehensive and accurate tracing of stock‐building materials into end‐use could enhance our understanding of future recycling potentials (from stock accumulation), shed light into resource efficiency of different end‐uses (for instance, by including the end‐uses for which hardly any information for stock‐driven dMFA is available, such as civil engineering infrastructure or industrial machinery), and show the relevance of materials to human well‐being through connections of product use to services (Kalt et al., 2019; Pauliuk, Fishman, et al., 2020).…”
