Abstract. Paleoclimate reconstructions reveal that Earth system has experienced sub-millennial scale climate changes over the past two millennia in response to internal/external forcing. Although sub-millennial hydroclimate fluctuations have been detected in the central Andes during this interval, the timing, magnitude, extent and direction of change of these events remain poorly defined. Here, we present a reconstruction of hydroclimate variations on the Pacific slope of the central Andes based on exceptionally wellpreserved plant macrofossils and associated archaeological remains from a hyperarid drainage (Quebrada Maní, ∼21 • S, 1000 m a.s.l.) in the Atacama Desert. During the late Holocene, riparian ecosystems and farming social groups flourished in the hyperarid Atacama core as surface water availability increased throughout this presently sterile landscape. Twenty-six radiocarbon dates indicate that these events occurred between 1050-680, 1615-1350 and 2500-2040 cal yr BP. Regional comparisons with rodent middens and other records suggest that these events were synchronous with pluvial stages detected at higher-elevations in the central Andes over the last 2500 yr. These hydroclimate changes also coincide with periods of pronounced SST gradients in the Tropical Pacific (La Niña-like mode), conditions that are conducive to significantly increased rainfall in the central Andean highlands and flood events in the low-elevation watersheds at inter-annual timescales. Our findings indicate that the positive anomalies in the hyperarid Atacama over the past 2500 yr represent a regional response of the central Andean climate system to changes in the global hydrological cycle at centennial timescales. Furthermore, our results provide support for the role of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature gradient changes as the primary mechanism responsible for climate fluctuations in the central Andes. Finally, our results constitute independent evidence for comprehending the major trends in cultural evolution of prehistoric peoples that inhabited the region.

Diversas hipótesis y modelos se han planteado en torno al papel que jugó la agricultura, horticultura, recolección, caza y ganadería de camélidos durante el periodo Formativo (1.400 a.C.-500 d.C.) en los oasis del Salar de Atacama y el Loa Medio. En este artículo se reevalúan estos planteamientos a la luz de nuevos datos obtenidos principalmente del análisis de microfósiles adheridos en palas líticas e instrumentos de molienda y en menor medida desde distintos isótopos (d13Ccol, d13Cap, d15N, d18O, Sr 87 /Sr 86 ). Los datos se interpretan desde una perspectiva teórica que enfatiza el riesgo y una evolución no lineal en la interacción sociedadplanta. Se discute la funcionalidad de los instrumentos analizados y el manejo de recursos silvestres como Cactáceas y Ciperáceas además de tubérculos aún no identificados. Desde la arqueobotánica se sugiere que los bosques de algarrobo (Prosopis) no son nativos del área, sino que fueron producto de una arboricultura formativa posiblemente ligada a una economía silvopastoralista en los oasis. Ambas propuestas replantean la historia cultural y ecológica del área, enriquecen la discusión del Formativo, y la biogeografía de Prosopis en América.Palabras claves: microfósiles, isótopos, arboricultura, silvopastoralismo, interacción sociedad-planta, Formativo. REFLEXIONES PaRa avaNzaR EN LOS EStudIOS dEL PERíOdO aRcaIcO EN LOS aNdES cENtRO-SuR 1 ThoughTs on moving forward ofLos autores identifican los problemas de investigación del Período Arcaico (10.000-3.400 a.p.) en la zona Centro-Sur de los Andes, para sugerir las prioridades que se deben tomar en cuenta para la realización de futuros estudios arqueológicos en la región. Varios temas arqueológicos aún permanecen inconclusos: (1) Los orígenes de los primeros habitantes de los Andes Centro-Sur. ¿Por dónde llegaron, en qué condiciones climáticas, cuál fue la cultura material que aportaron y cómo se dio el paso hacia el período Arcaico? (2) ¿Qué se conoce del tiempo arcaico en los flancos orientales de los Andes? (3) ¿Dónde se observa el Arcaico boliviano y cuáles son sus características? (4) ¿Cuál fue la adaptación del Arcaico en la zona peruana del Lago Titicaca? (5) ¿Cuál es el estado de la cronología regional que hemos construido para el Arcaico? ¿Qué estudios se han hecho y cuánto falta por hacer? Por último, concluimos con una discusión de tres aspectos principales del proceso cultural de la región: (a) las adaptaciones de los primeros habitantes de la región, (b) el proceso de domesticación del ganado y la cultivación agrícola, y (c) el inicio y origen del desarrollo de la sociedad compleja y la jerarquía social.
