From Parametric Representation to Dynamical System: Shifting Views of the Motor Cortex in Motor Control

Abstract: In contrast to traditional representational perspectives in which the motor cortex is involved in motor control via neuronal preference for kinetics and kinematics, a dynamical system perspective emerging in the last decade views the motor cortex as a dynamical machine that generates motor commands by autonomous temporal evolution. In this review, we first look back at the history of the representational and dynamical perspectives and discuss their explanatory power and controversy from both empirical and comp… Show more

“…This would be an important step to understand whether and how different dynamic signals (e.g. acceleration, velocity) in the vestibular system may function in different contexts, just like in the motor system [134]. Finally, more and precise causal manipulation experiments need to be conducted to search for areas showing effects on behaviour under both sensory stimuli conditions.…”

“…After pre-processing, the data was spike- Neurons in the motor cortex have been found to encode various kinetic and kinematic parameters. In particular, the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) has long been thought to be involved in the preparation and execution of hand movements 15 . In the center-out reaching task studeies, cortical motor neurons have shown cosine tuning for the reach direction 16,17 .…”

“…The human brain, a complex dynamical system, exists in a limited number of equilibrium states, maintained by processes distributed across various neuronal networks [1]. A significant perturbation results in a phase shift in equilibirium, with associated changes across the organizational hierarchy, not limited to the perturbed region/ process.…”
