The idealistic musical work concept is the idea that pieces of music exist beyond space and time. Having emerged in Western art music, this concept has not had an easy time co-existing with musical practices around the world. To show the discrepancies and consistencies of the musical work concept vis-à-vis everyday practice, the book The Movement of a Musical Work. Ernst Krenek’s Opus 20 in the Interwar Years sets out to explore the making of one single musical work and its movement in and with people, objects, time, and space. Set amid 1920s social circles of European modern music or New Music, the book focuses entirely on the Third String Quartet, op. 20 by Austrian composer Ernst Krenek.

Introdução: A organização do conhecimento constitui uma construção cultural, permeada por valores situados no espaço e no tempo, e caracterizada por uma natureza helicoidal - circular aberta e ascendente – aspecto que reflete a dinâmica das comunidades discursivas nela interagentes, permeadas por forças sociais transformadoras e por uma ética de reciprocidades entre os indivíduos comunicantes. Objetivos: Busca-se discutir a natureza e as características da tríade de comunidades discursivas ali interagentes – do produtor, do usuário e do organizador/mediador - notadamente em uma perspectiva de auto-organização e em um movimento dinâmico de configuração helicoidal como uma alternativa para melhor compreender os processos, instrumentos e produtos envolvidos. Métodos: Trata-se de uma reflexão de cunho teórico-especulativo, pautada em que um recorte da literatura internacional sobre organização do conhecimento em sua vertente sociocultural cotejado com as questões relativas às comunidades discursivas de modo subsidiar a argumentação sobre a natureza comunicativa desse contexto. Resultados: Evidencia-se a necessidade de se considerar que os responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento dos processos de organização e representação do conhecimento assim como os responsáveis pela idealização e elaboração de sistemas de organização do conhecimento constituem igualmente uma comunidade discursiva que, por sua vez, deve estar em plena consonância com as duas outras de modo a propiciar uma ética transcultural de mediação que inclua as diferentes vertentes culturais e suas relações de modo a garantir uma efetiva garantia cultural. Conclusão: Considerando que a organização do conhecimento constitui uma necessidade humana ao longo da história, acredita-se que a noção de auto-organização na tríade de comunidades discursivas envolvidas na organização do conhecimento – a da produção, a da recepção e a do tratamento – quando compreendida nos termos de uma visão sinergética, epistemológica e ontológica, confere maior significado teórico e melhor explicitação aos processos, instrumentos e produtos envolvidos.

Concept theory in library and information science: an epistemological analysis

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the literature on concept theory in library and information science (LIS) from an epistemological perspective, ascribing each paper to an epistemological family and discussing their relevance in the context of the knowledge organization (KO) domain. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a hermeneutic approach for the analysis of the texts that compose the corpus of study following contingency and categorical analyses. More specifically, the paper works with Bardin’s contingency analysis and follows Hjørland’s families of epistemologies for the categorization. Findings The analysis corroborates the observations made for the last ten years about the scarcity of studies on concept theory in LIS and KO. However, the study also reveals an epistemological turn on concept theory since 2009 that could be considered a departure from the rationalist views that dominated the field and a continuation of a broader paradigm shift in LIS and KO. All analyzed papers except two follow pragmatist or historicist approaches. Originality/value This paper follows-up and systematizes the contributions to the LIS and KO fields on concept theory mainly during the last decade. The epistemological analysis reveals the dominant views in this paradigm shift and the main authors and trends that are present in the LIS literature on concept theory.
