From Mouth-to-Mouth to Bag-Valve-Mask Ventilation: Evolution and Characteristics of Actual Devices—A Review of the Literature

Abstract: Manual ventilation is a vital procedure, which remains difficult to achieve for patients who require ventilatory support. It has to be performed by experienced healthcare providers that are regularly trained for the use of bag-valve-mask (BVM) in emergency situations. We will give in this paper, a historical view on manual ventilation's evolution throughout the last decades and describe the technical characteristics, advantages, and hazards of the main devices currently found in the market. Artificial ventilat… Show more

“…Henning Ruben (1914e2004) innovated the air mask bag unit, commonly known as the 'Ambu bag', which remains a mainstay in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. 11 The role of anaesthesiology in the COVID-19 response reflects the legacy of these pioneers. Just as the polio epidemics drew on anaesthesiologists from operating theatres for cardiorespiratory support, so has the COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…In this book, the writer mentioned that to rescue a hanged person, besides to stimulate with things with strong smell, it is necessary to blow air into the patient's mouth and the relatives can do this [9]. In the West, in 1472 Paulus Bagellardus published the first known book on childhood diseases and described mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by recommending to midwives to blow in to the new born's mouth if there is no respiration [10]. All of these history is the basic of mouth-tomouth resuscitation in modern medical.…”

“…The Bag-valve-mask was also known as manual resuscitator is a mechanical system that intelligently delivers air to a single direction when it is compressed and takes air from the environment when relaxation takes place [1]. In a proper way, BVM ensures air and oxygen from the environment to the patient.…”
