From Coordination Polymers to Doped Rare‐Earth Oxides

Abstract: A series of bimetallic coordination polymers were synthesised from lanthanide salts (chlorides or nitrates of Ce, Nd, Gd) and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ) under aqueous and anhydrous conditions, to be used as preceramics for mixed oxide synthesis. Syntheses in water or tetrahydrofuran (THF) gave rise to two different types of metalorganic frameworks. A new polymeric species, [Gd(DHBQ)-Cl(THF) 2 ] n , was characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction {[Gd(DHBQ)Cl(THF) 2 ] n , a = 8.643(2) Å, b = 9.… Show more

“…As a typical example, we consider using mixed lanthanide CPs for the production of rare earth oxides. 355 In particular, well-dened cylindrical or spherical micro-morphologies can be prepared by varying solvents (water or THF) which were discovered in the resulting oxides aer thermal treatment. Such bimetallic CPs were synthesized by the interaction of chlorides or nitrates of Ce, Nd, Gd with 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone and used as precursors for mixed oxide ceramics.…”

“…8 In a previous report, we described how mesoparticles of MOFs based on lanthanide ions and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ) could be synthesised and used in the synthesis of doped rare-earth oxides. 9 We showed that the MOF particles have an original cylindrical shape, which is all the more unexpected since the material is highly crystalline. Spherical or cylindrical shapes are mostly associated with amorphous materials (e.g.…”

“…Moreover, we showed previously that the cylindrical particles contain a large amount of water, but the shape of the particles is maintained when brought to high temperature, which is also unexpected. 9 It is thus very interesting to try and understand how the cylindrical particles are built and how they grow.…”

“…An interesting approach for the formation of mixed lanthanide coordination polymers for the preparation of rare earth oxides was reported by Demars and coworkers [ 114 ]. Different shapes of investigated oxides have been found simply by varying the preparation methods of the metal-containing polymeric precursor material.…”

“…Different shapes of investigated oxides have been found simply by varying the preparation methods of the metal-containing polymeric precursor material. Well-defined cylindrical or spherical micro-morphologies could be adjusted by changing the used solvents (water or tetrahydrofurane, THF) which retained in the final oxides after thermal treatment [ 114 ].…”
