“…Brown and colleagues (2000) found that among adolescents with hemophilia and infected with HIV, adolescent perceptions of peer support for safer sex was associated with improvement and maintenance of safer sexual behavior. This is consistent with cross-sectional studies that find associations of safer sexual behavior with healthy peer norms (Santelli et al 2004;Sieving et al 2006). Among an inner-city sample of women, greater perception of peer support for condom use was associated with being in a later stage of change (Cabral et al 2004), but among adults attending inner-city health clinics, peer norms were not associated with transitions in stage of change for condom use behavior (Malotte et al 2000).…”

“…This is in contrast to findings from a number of studies (Blum & Mmari, 2004;Hatherall et al, 2005;Kerrigan, Witt, Glass, Chung, & Ellen, 2006;Rani & Lule, 2004;Sieving, Eisenberg, Pettingell, & Skay, 2006). Our aim was to distinguish between socially induced vulnerability (determined by community norms, and family and peer socialization) and the propensity for sexual risk behavior (determined by endogenous factors such as personal values and beliefs, as well as experiences).…”

“…Over the course of adolescence, intimacy with friends increases (Hunter & Youniss, 1982) and friends may exert substantial influence over adolescents' romantic relationships (Connolly, Furman, & Konarski, 2000). Furthermore, youth tend to be friends with peers who engage in similar behaviors (Sieving, Eisenberg, Pettingell, & Skay, 2006). It is possible that, similar to the situation described above, youth whose social network sanctions their sexual relationship may particularly benefit from the affective improvement seen before sex.…”
