Adolescent Sexual Risk: Factors Predicting Condom Use Across the Stages of Change

Abstract: This study examined factors associated with high-risk adolescents' movement toward or away from adopting consistent condom use behavior using the Transtheoretical Model Stages of Change. Participants drawn from the inactive comparison condition of a randomized HIV prevention trial (Project SHIELD) responded to items assessing pros and cons of condom use, peer norms, condom communication, and perceived invulnerability to HIV. Participants were categorized based on their condom use behavior using the Transtheore… Show more

“…Self-efficacy was a strong predictor for condom use. We may assume that it is temporally primary to the target behavior, a finding, which is confirmed by the existing literature on self-efficacy (Bandura, 1997) using longitudinal study designs in various populations (Grossman et al, 2008;Kapadia et al, 2009;Zimmerman et al, 2007). A further limitation of this study was the convenience sampling.…”

“…This seemed to be expressed equally across all groups. That said, the majority of AGBM believed their friends did not use condoms when they have sex, echoing the influence of perceived peer norms and behaviors on condom use among adolescents reported by others 61,69 . It is interesting to note that these three aspects are typically described as motivators for condom use in widely used theories of HIV preventive behaviors.…”
