“…Previous studies reported that snails are indiscriminate grazers searching for food (mainly detritus) (e.g., organic pieces, algae, silts) which adhere to the surface of macrophytes or the sediment or other substrata, and adapt their diets to the relative abundance of available sources (Elder and Collins, 1991), and other studies showed that MCs content in invertebrates depended on the toxic level in their food sources Zhang et al, 2007). Hence, we deduce that the relationship between intracellular toxin content and hepatopancreas toxin content is probably linked to the settling of cyanobacteria from the water column.…”

“…It is also pointed out that the concentration of metals in an organism is not necessarily an indication of the level of concentration in the water column. According to Elder and Collins (1991), bioaccumulation and toxicity are extremely situation dependent; therefore, concentration levels should not be extrapolated from one particular area to other situations where the biological species or environmental conditions are different. That even within one species, individual characteristics such as size, life stage, sex, and genotype can have significant effects on responses to contaminants.…”

“…Many research interests have been generated on the integrity of aquatic environment especially as it concerns heavy metal pollution (Rashed, 2001;Tawari-Fufeyin and Ekaye, 2007;Yilmag, 2007;Yilmag et al, 2009). As Elder and Collins (1991) pointed concentration of metals in an organisms cannot be extrapolated from place to place due to differences in individual organisms and environmental characters, we work to investigate the concentration of some metals in Malletia cumingii in Okpon River.…”

“…Several studies report that freshwater bivalves are excellent freshwater biomonitors of the ecosystem status, in particular as accumulators of metals and trace elements (Elder and Collins, 1991;Ravera et al 2003;Rodrigues et al 2012) and being exposed to suspended solids and turbulence (Aldridge et al 1987). Freshwater bivalves can also represent a great conservational tool because of their high longevity and particular sensitivity to water quality changes (Heller, 1990;Elder and Collins, 1991).…”
