“…pulex was counted to provide an estimate of population abundance . Animals from the Haseley Brook and Pickering Beck samples were then observed microscopically to confirm identification and to determine the sex of each individual using the criteria described by Karaman & Pinkster (1977) . A Seescan Solitaire Image Analyser was used to measure the area of each animal's lateral aspect .…”

“…Gammarus pulex (L.) is a widespread and functionally important stream detritivore found throughout much of Europe and Northern Asia, including the British Isles (Karaman and Pinkster, 1977) . It can play a significant role in processing the leaf material that falls into streams (Willoughby & Sutcliffe, 1976 ;Willoughby & Earnshaw, 1982 ;Welton et al, 1983) and is an important prey item for many fish species (Smyly, 1957 ;Maitland, 1966 ;Welton, 1979).…”

“…There are many papers on different taxonomic groups, but only a few of them went into biogeographic comparisons. Among these exceptions we count Dia & Botosaneanu (1983) on Trichoptera; Karaman & Pinkster (1977) on Amphipoda, Gammaridae, and Schutt (1982) on mollusks. Comparative data can be found in Giani et al (1982), Pascar-Gluzman & Dimentman (1984 on Oligochaeta and Moubayed & Laville (1983) on Chironomida.…”

“…A local population of Gammarus laticoxalis laticoxalis Karaman and Pinkster, 1977, living in a perennial high altitude (1 100 m) river with relatively constant annual temperature fluctuation (9 °C-15 °C) was studied throughout 1980-1982 . Observations and results obtained were based on systematic studies of a large number of individuals -11 245 males, 8 010 ovigerous females, 3 087 non ovigerous females and 53 910 juvenils -.…”
