Freshwater fish introductions in Spain: facts and figures at the beginning of the 21st century

Abstract: Twenty-five introduced fish species are established in Spanish fresh waters. Most of the introductions took place after 1900, with a significant exponential increase during the second half of the 20th century (15 species introduced from 1949). Major stocking efforts in Spanish waters have been suspended, but recently some species have been released by anglers or are suspected to be escapes from fish farms. Stream regulation is considered to be one of the main negative factors affecting river ecosystems in Spai… Show more

“…In the continental Portuguese freshwaters, eighteen non-native species are currently established, representing from 25% to 30% of the total fish community in several basins, mainly in the southern region (Ribeiro et al, 2009;Ilhéu, unpublished data). In Spain, twenty-six non-native fish species are currently established in freshwater ecosystems, representing at least 30% of the current freshwater fish fauna list (Elvira and Almodóvar, 2001;Leunda, 2010). The main routes or pathways for fish invasions in the Iberian Peninsula are well identified, being the entryway, the French border, with an invasion route from east to west, from Spain to Portugal.…”

“…In other European countries, the first period is similar to that in Slovakia. In the second period, the number of introductions has gradually increased up to the present (Crivelli 1995;Elvira & Almodovar 2001;Copp et al 2007;Hesthagen & Sandlund 2007;Verreycken et al 2007;Lusk et al 2010). …”

“…Los datos más recientes revelan proporciones alarmantes de especies naturalizadas en algunos grupos, como es el caso de los peces de agua dulce, de los cuáles se han introducido al menos 25 especies en los últimos 75 años (Elvira & Almodóvar, 2001), siendo los ecosistemas acuáticos continentales los más afectados por las EEI (Cursach, 2003). Una de las especies de invertebrados que ha obtenido mayor éxito en su expansión, es el cangrejo rojo americano (Procambarus clarkii).…”
