Frequent Consumption of Selenium-Enriched Chicken Meat by Adults Causes Weight Loss and Maintains Their Antioxidant Status

Abstract: To assess the effects of a moderately high-protein intake on the body composition, biochemical, and antioxidant status parameters in young adults depending on either selenium- (Se) or non-enriched chicken consumption. The volunteers (n = 24) that completed the 10-week nutritional intervention were distributed in two parallel groups and randomly assigned to follow an isocaloric diet with moderately high content in protein (30% energy), either with the consumption of four 200 g portions/week of Se- or non-enrich… Show more

“…Regarding these outcomes, there are controversial opinions. Some authors have reported that after the consumption of antioxidant products by subjects with an optimal antioxidant status, no differences or improvements have been observed [37][38][39]. However, in subjects with low antioxidant status, beneficial effects have been shown [40,9].…”

“…Indeed, some long-term studies with no calorie restriction and programmed macronutrient distribution have resulted in a more effective weight loss and maintenance than conventional macronutrient distribution energy-restricted diets [11,30,31]. In a recent study, an isocaloric diet with a moderately high content in protein led to a body weight and fat mass reduction after 10 weeks [26], without affecting fat-free mass and maintaining glucose and lipid profile, which matches with the outcomes of the current intervention.…”

“…The SeMet containing plant or yeast protein consumed by animals can be also stored in animal protein, which can result in bioactive selenium content in meat, milk, and eggs with potential human health benefits. As a result, supplementation of animal diets with selenium yeast contributed to the development of selenium-rich functional foods, including selenium-enriched milk, eggs and meats for human consumption [49][50][51][52]. Pure selenomethionine is also known as a toxic substance.…”
