Frequency of Urgent or Emergent Vitreoretinal Surgical Procedures in the United States During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: (AAO) indicated that urgent or emergent vitreoretinal surgical procedures should continue during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although decreases in the frequency of critical procedures have been reported outside the field of ophthalmology, analyses are limited by volume, geography, and time. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the frequency of ophthalmic surgical procedures deemed urgent or emergent by the AAO changed across the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PA… Show more

“…More rigorous studies on a population level are needed to fully evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on DR-related outcomes and whether the associated negative outcomes are permanent. Moreover, a multicenter analysis of pandemic-associated changes in retinal procedures and surgeries demonstrated a decrease in the number of laser procedures, vitrectomies for retinal detachment repair, and vitrectomies for other indications [20]. Further work will be needed to determine the impact of the pandemic on PDR-specific laser procedures and vitrectomies.…”

“…In a multicenter cross-sectional study across 17 institutions in the USA, billing data for vitreoretinal procedures from January 1, 2019 and May 21, 2020 were queried, yielding an aggregate of 526,536 procedures [20]. The average weekly intravitreal injections per institution for all indications were significantly lower in April 2020 compared to April 2019.…”

“…They also reported that important decrease in the numbers of vitreoretinal surgeries although the American Academia of Ophthalmology endorsed the continued performance of emergent/urgent vitreoretinal surgical procedures. 11 In this study, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was the most common indication for vitreoretinal surgeries with a rate of 55.7% amid COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in Turkey and followed by diabetic retinal complications. Silicon oil-related complications, crystalline lens/intraocular lens drop, and endophthalmitis were the other indications for vitreoretinal surgery.…”

“…Breazzano et al 11 reported that retinal detachment repair was a more common vitreoretinal surgery indication amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA when compared with the other vitreoretinal surgery indications. They also reported that important decrease in the numbers of vitreoretinal surgeries although the American Academia of Ophthalmology endorsed the continued performance of emergent/urgent vitreoretinal surgical procedures.…”

“… 22 In a recent large US nationwide study, Breazzano et al reported similar results, with a decrease in the rate of ophthalmological procedures as much as 84.3% for some vitrectomies. 23 These authors found that this trend did not concern vitreoretinal surgery activity only but also intravitreal injection activity, which showed a 38.6% decrease. A recent nationwide study reported a 47.1% decrease during the first 5 weeks of France’s lockdown period.…”
