Frequency of autoimmune disorders and autoantibodies in patients with neuromyelitis optica

Abstract: The results of the present study underscored that the NMO patients present high frequency of autoantibodies against cellular antigens and the presence of autoimmune disorders. Further studies with large number of NMO patients may contribute to advances in the understanding of NMO disease mechanisms.

“…Additionally, African-Americans with NMO at our institution had a higher female:male distribution than has been documented [3]. Not surprisingly, SLE was the most common associated systemic rheumatic disease in our cohort, however the frequency of SLE and ANA positivity in our NMO cohort was higher than has been reported (23.8% and 78.6%, respectively) [4]. Additional larger studies are needed to further explore how NMOSD in African-Americans may differ from other populations.…”

“…In a cohort study conducted in Brazil, among 22 NMO patients, with 68.2% being Afro-Brazilians, 27.3% of them had other autoimmune disorders including autoimmune thyroid disease (n=3,13.5%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (n = 1), systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis (n = 1), and Raynaud"s phenomenon (n = 1). Furthermore, the most frequently reported autoantibodies included anti-nucleosome (ANuA) (31.8%), ANA (27.3%), anti-TPO (22.7%), and anti-Tg (22.7%) [163].…”

“…On the other hand, vasculopathy, due to systemic autoimmune diseases, facilitates the pathogenesis of NMOSD by destructing blood-brain barrier (B.B.B) and with entrance of the AQP4 antibody to CNS [163].…”

“…We therefore investigated the frequency of IgG anti‐dsDNA and IgG anti‐DWEYS in the serum of patients with NMOSD, an inflammatory and demyelinating disease in which patients have recently been reported to harbor IgG anti‐dsDNA antibodies . The significance and pathogenicity of dsDNA antibodies in the course of NMOSD remains unknown.…”
