Frequency, distribution, and immunomorphologic characteristics of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified in a tertiary care center in Southern India

Abstract: PTCL, NOS constituted about 30.68% of all PTCLs in our institution during a 5-year period and was the second most common type of PTCL. Immunophenotyping using a wide panel of T-cell antibodies is necessary to distinguish PTCL, NOS from other lymphomas which they mimic, as they are known to carry a worse prognosis.

“…The main subtype obtained from the reclassification with the newer IHC panel was TFH-derived lymphomas, which is similar to previous studies 9. AITL occurred in 9.25% of the T-cell lymphomas, similar to a previous Indian study, but varied prevalence has been noted 7,12,13. At our tertiary care center, mild skewing was expected in view of high referral rate.…”

“…9 AITL occurred in 9.25% of the T-cell lymphomas, similar to a previous Indian study, but varied prevalence has been noted. 7,12,13 At our tertiary care center, mild skewing was expected in view of high referral rate. Males formed the bulk of the study cohort with a slightly younger median age than in Western populations, which could be attributed to a younger Indian age pyramid, and a lower male-to-female ratio was noted in AITL patients.…”

“…PTCL accounts for less than 15% of all NHLs in the United States and Europe but they are more frequent in the Far East [4,5]. PTCL not otherwise specified (NOS) is the most common group of PTCL and it includes cases that do not correspond to any specific subtype [5,6]. Despite aggressive chemotherapy, the majority of patients with most subtypes of PTCL have unfavorable prognosis [7].…”

“…Patients with PTCL present predominantly with nodal disease, but extranodal disease is often present, with skin being the most common extranodal site [10]. Pulmonary involvement is relatively rare; its frequency has been assessed from 2% to 8% of the cases, while extrapulmonary manifestations in the form of pleural effusions are present in 3%–12% of the individuals with this disorder [6,10]. The chest imaging findings of PTCL have not been well characterized [11].…”
