Frequency-dependent effects of sequenced pulsed magnetic field on experimental diabetic neuropathy

Abstract: The present results demonstrated that sequenced L-PMF treatment can relieve neuropathic signs of diabetes in rats. Anti-hyperglycemic, anti-allodynic and anti-hyperalgesic effects of L-PMF treatment can be closely correlated with each other. Furthermore, decreasing actions of L-PMF on pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratio can suggest that the therapeutic potential of L-PMF in diabetes induced neuropathy may involve the regulation of the neuroinflammatory/neuroimmune processes.

“…In the literature, 40 Hz magnetic field was used for wound healing, bone marrow edema and diabetic neuropathy for treatment purposes, and positive results have been reported. 2 , 3 , 4 In another study, the rats were exposed to pulsed magnetic field of 50 Hz for 3 times a day for 4 h and it was found to reduce necrosis in urethral cells. 22 For almost 50 years various forms of EMFs have been used to promote bone formation after fractures as well as for the treatment of osteoporosis.…”

“…Exteremely Low and Low frequency pulsed magnetic field is recently and frequently been used in many treatments like neuropathy therapy, bone marrow edema, promoting bone formation after fractures and wound healing in different departments. 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 High Frequency electromagnetic waves are the radio waves which are used in mobile communications. 6 , 7 …”

“…These might due to the different frequency range, wavelength and energy between RF and ELF MF. The mechanism of how magnetic fields affect biological processes remains unclear, but it is widely accepted different frequencies interact with the body in different ways (Mert et al, ). The bioeffects of ELF MF have been observed within relatively narrow frequency windows (Prato et al, ), which indicated that the sensitivity of LECs to electromagnetic field appear to be limited to an optimal frequency.…”

“…Using a STZ-rat model, the effects of PEMFT on allodynia and hyperalgesia were evaluated using PEMF spiked pulse trains of different frequencies with peak field intensities of 1.5 mT [ 28 ]. The treatment pattern used repeating four-minute bursts of impulses alternating between either 1-Hz and 5-Hz or between 30-Hz and 40-Hz for an overall treatment interval of 60 minutes.…”
