Frequencies of feline blood types in Hungary

Abstract: Feline blood group determination is done as a routine diagnostic method in numerous countries. Blood transfusion reactions and feline neonatal isoerythrolysis (FNI) can be avoided with the identification of different feline blood groups. The present study is the first investigation in Hungary during which 100 cats have been examined from all over the country. These cats were out of six breeds: European domestic shorthair, Persian mix, Persian, Abyssinian, Siamese and British shorthair. In the Hungarian feline … Show more

“…Although type AB occurs only in breeds in which type B is detected, type AB cats were found in some but not all breeds with type B blood (Giger and others 1992, Jensen and others 1994, Bagdi and others 2001, Arikan and others 2003). The absence of type AB cats in breeds having type B cats supports the idea that type AB cats are not the result of a typical AxB mating but rather are due to a third allele that allows the codominant expression of the A and B erythrocyte antigen (Giger and others 1991a, Griot‐Wenk and others 1996).…”

“…Type A is the most common blood type observed in domestic cats; however, the frequency of blood types in non‐pedigree domestic cats varies worldwide. Although overall 98 per cent of all domestic shorthair (DSH) and domestic longhair (DLH) cats in the USA have type A blood (Giger and others 1991b), studies in Australia and in European countries have shown that the prevalence of type B cats in non‐pedigree cat populations can vary from 0 to 26 per cent (Auer and Bell 1981, Giger and others 1992, Knottenbelt and others 1999a, Bagdi and others 2001, Mylonakis and others 2001). In contrast, type AB cats are rare, with a frequency of less than 1 per cent in most of the non‐pedigree and purebred cat populations studied worldwide (Griot‐Wenk and others 1996).…”

“…A majority of random bred cats throughout the world are type A [4-6,9-13]. However, some cat breeds have a high frequency of type B individuals.…”
