ResumoOs objetivos do estudo foram averiguar a frequência de fungos do gênero Candida na mucosa oral de crianças em relação aos fatores predisponentes como cárie, alimentação e higienização bucal e identificar as espécies de Candida ocorrentes nas crianças com cárie ativa. O estudo possui caráter descritivo do tipo experimental com abordagem de cunho qualiquantitativo. Foram amostradas 59 crianças com idade entre dois e doze anos, atendidas na Clínica Odontológica Universitária da Faculdade Maria Milza (CLIOF-FAMAM), com coleta de amostra da mucosa com swab no período de março a maio de 2014. Foi aplicado um questionário ao responsável legal acerca dos componentes comportamentais de cada uma das crianças e avaliação clínica odontológica para verificação do número de cáries ativas. A identificação das espécies de Candida foi realizada utilizando-se o meio de cultura cromogênico CHROMagar TM Candida. Das crianças avaliadas, 45,76% apresentaram crescimento de Candida, sendo mais frequente no sexo masculino com idades entre 8-10 anos. A maioria das crianças com cárie ativa apresentou, pelo menos, uma espécie de Candida, principalmente Candida albicans seguido por Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis e Candida spp. Verificou-se uma associação positiva entre a presença de Candida e de cárie e falta de higiene oral.Palavras-chave: Leveduras. AbstractThe objectives of this study are: 1. to assess the frequency of the yeast Candida in the oral mucosa of children in relation to predisposing factors such as caries, food and oral hygiene, and 2. to identify Candida species in caries-active children. We adopted an exploratory and descriptive methodology within a quantitative and qualitative approach. Oral mucosa of 59 children aged 2-12, treated at the Comprehensive Dental Clinic of Maria Milza College (CLIOF-FAMAM), were sampled with swab from March to May 2014. A questionnaire was administered to the legal representatives to assess the child's behavior, and a dental clinical evaluation was performed to determine the number of active caries per child. Candida species were identified by means of chromogenic culture media (CHROMagar TM Candida). Forty five point seventy six percent of the children were infected by Candida, being more frequent among males aged 8-10. Most of the active-caries children presented at least one Candida species, mainly Candida albicans followed by Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis and Candida spp. A positive association between the presence of Candida and caries, and poor oral hygiene was verified.

A dental prosthesis is a devise used to substitute missing teeth in order to restore the functional and aesthetic factors affected by the total or partial loss of one or more units. However, there is a high prevalence of oral candidiasis in denture user patients. The objective of the present study is to assess the prevalence of microorganisms in the oral cavity of denture users and to identify and determine the frequency of the main Candida species present in the oral cavity of these individuals. Eighty one subjects were randomly addressed, oral mucosa samples were collected and a questionnaire was administered to assess the profile of this population. The identification of species was performed using a chromogenic culture medium. Fifty six point eighty one percent of the individuals reported pre-existing diseases, especially hypertension (22.72 %) and diabetes (9.09 %). Candida grew in 77.27% of the denture users and in 22.27% of the individuals without prosthesis. Candida albicans was the most prevalent species in patients wearing dental prosthesis and in the control sample. A significant correlation between the presence of Candida and the use of prosthesis was found. Thus prosthesis users require permanent care from a dentist in terms of hygiene, adaptation and substitution. These attitudes promote oral health and life quality of users reducing the incidence of Candida infections.Keyword: Oral Health. Dental Prosthesis. Candida. ResumoPrótese dentária é um aparelho utilizado em substituição aos dentes ausentes, visando restabelecer os fatores funcionais e estéticos envolvidos pela perda ou comprometimento dos dentes, entretanto, verifica-se uma alta prevalência de candidíase bucal em pacientes usuários de próteses. O presente estudo visou à avaliação da carga fúngica bucal de indivíduos usuários de prótese dentária e identificação e frequência das principais espécies de Candida na cavidade bucal desses indivíduos. Os indivíduos foram selecionados aleatoriamente através da abordagem direta. Coletou-se uma amostra da mucosa jugal e aplicou-se um formulário visando traçar o perfil dessa população. A identificação das espécies foi realizada utilizando-se o meio de cultura cromogênico. Foram realizadas coletas em 81 indivíduos. Observou-se que 56,81% dos indivíduos amostrados relataram possuir doenças pré-existentes, sendo as mais prevalentes a hipertensão (22,72%) e a diabetes (9,09%). Foi observado crescimento de Candida em 34 (77,27%) dos 44 indivíduos usuários de prótese dentária e em 10 (22,27%) dos 37 indivíduos não usuários. A espécie mais prevalente em usuários de prótese e no grupo controle foi Candida albicans. Verificou-se estatisticamente que houve correlação entre a presença de Candida e uso de prótese. O uso de prótese exige cuidados permanentes com sua adaptação e necessidade de substituição ao término de sua vida útil, sendo necessário o acompanhamento do profissional odontólogo. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify Candida species from the oral cavity of denture wearers with denture-related stomatitis who were attended at the University Federal of Pará (Belém City, Pará State, Brazil). A total of 36 denture wearers with denture-related stomatitis were included, and type I (50%), type II (33%) and type III (17%) stomatitis were observed. Candida spp. were isolated from 89% of the cases and included five different Candida species. C. albicans was the most frequently recovered species (78% of the cases), followed by C. famata and C. tropicalis. We observed a significant association between Candida species isolation and unsatisfactory denture condition (p = 0.0017). Our results demonstrated the highly frequency of Candida species isolation in denture wearers with denture-related stomatitis and showed the relationship between these species and poor denture maintenance.
