Free radical polymerization using a bifunctional initiator. Part I. The kinetic equations

Abstract: Kinetic equations are developed for the bifunctional initiation of free radical polymerization using a system such as a ferrous compound and a dihydroperoxide. Whenever the concentration of hydroperoxide groups attached to polymer chains reaches a stationary state concentration, the system exhibits the kinetic behaviour predicted [but never yet observed] for diradical propagation.

Metallacetylacetonate sind eine der am vielseitigsten einsetzbaren Substanzklassen bei der Synthese von Hochpolymeren. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird eine Zusammenfassung uber die Verwendung dieser Chelate als Initiatoren bei Kettenwachstumsreaktionen gegeben. Dabei wird besonders auf die Mechanismen der radikalischen Homo-und Copolymerisation und deren Beeinflussung durch verschiedene Aktivatoren eingegangen. Weiterhin werden die Verwendung von Metallacetylacetonaten zusammen rnit normalen radikalischen Polymerisationsinitiatoren besprochen und die Einsatzmoglichkeiten dieser Metallchelate bei der ionischen, der koordinativen und der Ringoffnungspolymerisation erlautert. Metal aeetylacetonates in the synthesis of maeromolecules. Part IMetal acetylacetonates are one of the multilateral applicable substances in the synthesis of high polymers. A summary on the application of these chelates as initiators of chain polymerization is provided in the first part of the work. Especially the mechanisms of free radical homo-and copolymerization and the influence of different activators are explained. Further, the use of metal acetylacetonates together with free radical initiators in the free radical polymerization is discussed and possibilities of application of these metal chelates in the ionic, coordination and ring opening polymerization are illustrated. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit und STAUDINGERindeX verschiedener deuterierter Styrole werden mit und ohne Zusatz von Azoisobuttersauredinitril bestimmt und mit den entsprechenden Werten der nicht markierten Verbindung verglichen. Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daf3 die Wasserstoffatome in ortho-Stellung zur Vinylgruppe am Startschritt der thermischen Polymerisation des Styrols beteiligt sind. SUMMARY:Rate of polymerization and STAUDINGERindex are determined for different deuterium containing styrenes with and without addition of azo-bis-isobuty-ronitrile. The results were compared with the corresponding values of normal styrene. The results indicate that the hydrogene atoms in ortho-position to the vinyl group participate in the thermal initiation of styrene.Styrol und wahrscheinlich Methylmethacrylat bzw. Homologe stellen die einzigen Monomeren dar, die nach heutiger Ansicht ohne Initiator eine rein thermische uber Radikale verlaufende Polymerisation eingehen.

The kinetics of the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 4.4'-diazidoazobenzene (DAAB) as initiator was investigated in benzene solution. It was found that the initial rate of polymerization (Rp) can be expressed by the equation:The overall activation energy for the polymerization was estimated to be 20.5 kcal/mole. The polymer obtained by the polymerization of MMA initiated by the above initiator was found to contain azobenzene fragment, presumably as endgroup. The thermal decomposition of DAAB was also studied in the temperature range 110 to 130OC. The overall activation energy of the decomposition of DAAB was 35.2 kcal/mole. The polymerization mechanism is discussed on the basis of these results. Z US AMM E N FA S S U N G : Die Kinetik der durch 4.4'-Diazidoazobenzol (DAAB) initiierten radikalischen Polymerisation von Methylmethacrylat (MMA) wurde in Benzol als Losungsmittel untersucht. Die Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit (Rp) folgt der Gleichung : Rp = k[DAAB]",62 [MMA]' 917. Die Bruttoaktivierungsenergie fur die Polymerisation wurde zu 20,5 kcal/Mol bestimmt. MMA-Polymere, die durch Polymerisation von MMA mit dem obengenannten Initiator hergestellt wurden, enthalten Azobenzol-Bruchstucke, vermutlich als Endgruppen. Die Zersetzung von DAAB wurde auch im Temperatnrbereich von 110 bis 13OoC untersucht. Die Bruttoaktivierungsenergie der Zersetznng von DAAB wurde zu 35,2 kcal/Mol geschatzt. Auf der Grundlage dieser Ergebnisse wurde der Polymerisationsmechanismus diskutiert.
