Fractures of the patella in children

Abstract: Fractures of the patella are relatively rare injuries for children. Fourteen patients with patellar fractures were reviewed. There were 12 boys and two girls with the age ranging between 9 and 15 years and an average of 11.4 years. Sleeve fractures were the most common type of patellar fractures observed (eight cases), followed by transverse fractures (four cases) and comminuted fractures (two cases). All the fractures were treated with open reduction and followed up for 2 to 20 years. Overall results were goo… Show more

“…Although casting provides rigid fixation, there will be associative muscle wasting and joint stiffness; this may lead to inconvenience and limited flexion of the knee. 2 Patellotibial cerclage wiring is able to provide an early joint range of motion with partial weight bearing, thus decreasing the chance of muscle wasting and joint stiffness. At the same time, the stress shielding provided by the wire decreases the chance of jeopardizing the blood supply to the patella, thus avoiding ischemic necrosis and nonunion.…”

“…2 Among these, sleeve fractures constitute about 57% of all patellar fractures. 3 Sleeve fracture of the patella usually occurs in children who have been taking part in activities requiring forceful extension of the knee, with the quadriceps contracting against resistance.…”

“…Fractures of the patella are relatively rare in children and adolescents with an estimated occurrence of 1% of all fractures in this age group [1]. Among these sleeve fractures of the patella are common and seen in children who have been taking part in activities requiring forceful extension of the knee with the quadriceps contracting against the resistance.…”

“…Они встречаются более чем в половине случаев переломов надко-ленника. Затем следуют поперечные переломы, реже всего встречаются оскольчатые [4][5][6]. От-личительной особенностью таких переломов яв-ляется частое сочетание перелома с разрывом медиального и латерального сухожильных растя-жений четырехглавой мышцы бедра.…”
