Fracture Toughness of Hybrid Components with Selective Laser Melting 18Ni300 Steel Parts

Abstract: Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is currently one of the more advanced manufacturing and prototyping processes, allowing the 3D-printing of complex parts through the layer-by-layer deposition of powder materials melted by laser. This work concerns the study of the fracture toughness of maraging AISI 18Ni300 steel implants by SLM built over two different conventional steels, AISI H13 and AISI 420, ranging the scan rate between 200 mm/s and 400 mm/s. The SLM process creates an interface zone between the conventiona… Show more

“…The energy of the laser beam reaching the surface of the powder carries radiation pressure and radiation heat, which partly absorbed by the surface of the powder and partly reflected into the environment [87]. The simple Gaussian profile of the laser beam creates overheating in the center of the molten pool and consequently large temperature gradients between the center and its periphery.…”

“…Hybrid parts manufactured by selective laser melting designed to produce parts from a single material. Hybrid parts manufactured by selective laser melting were investigated [12]. The concept of multi-material fabrication by SLM has been reported in the literature [8][9]; however, these products were printed by physically mixing powders before layering.…”

“…SLM has demonstrated its potential for manufacturing mesh structure with the desired dimensions. The formation of a mesh pattern has a strong potential to increase the functionality and costeffectiveness of the SLM process [41]. In this study, the fabrication of a metal mesh using SLM has been investigated as a fast and easy process with a tailored dimensional accuracy.…”
