Fractional-order PI based STATCOM and UPFC controller to diminish subsynchronous resonance

Abstract: This research article proposes a powerful fractional-order PI controller to mitigate the subsynchronous oscillations in turbine-generator shaft due to subsynchronous resonance (SSR) with flexible AC transmission system devices such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and unified power flow controller (UPFC). The diminution of SSR is achieved by the raising of network damping at those frequencies which are proximate to the torsional mode frequency of the turbine-generator shaft. The increase of network … Show more

“…Bongiorno et al address the damping of SSR using PI controller‐based SSSC. The injection of the voltage of subsynchronous frequency component in series with a current of the subsynchronous component to damp out SSR is proposed in Thirumalaivasan et al In Koteswara Raju et al, the mitigation of SSR is achieved by using FACTS devices with fractional‐order PI controller in the control circuit. However, proper control strategy with fast response and robust performance is mandatory, with further depth investigations.…”

“…Static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is used to control the power flow, damp out power oscillation, and mitigating the subsynchronous resonance (SSR) in transmission lines . In previous studies, the mitigation of SSR is achieved by using FACTS devices with fractional order proportional integral (PI) controller in the control circuit . The insertion of SSSC in the fault loop affects the components of current and voltage (transient and steady state) .…”
