Fractal Analysis of Radiographic Trabecular Bone Texture and Bone Mineral Density: Two Complementary Parameters Related to Osteoporotic Fractures

Abstract: Trabecular bone microarchitecture and bone mineral density (BMD) are two main factors related to osteoporotic fractures. Currently, however, microarchitecture is not evaluated. We have developed and validated a trabecular bone texture analysis from radiographic images. The objective was to determine if the fractal analysis of texture was able to distinguish osteoporotic fracture groups from control groups, either in vertebrae, hip, or wrist fractures, and to determine if this indicator and BMD were independent… Show more

“…Fractal analysis has been largely used in medical applications [7,15,19,20,43]. In particular, it was used for the characterization and classification of mammogram density [19], the study of lesion detectability in mammogram textures [16,29], and the assessment of breast cancer risk [19,32].…”

“…For example, fractal parameters have been used to characterize trabecular structure on 2-D radiographs 5,18,35,36 but have rarely been applied to three-dimensional CT data sets. [37][38][39] The five texture parameters used in this study are easy to calculate, and their use in isolation or in combination with BMD was able to distinguish the model type and to quantify the change in the trabecular bone structure.…”

“…[30][31][32][33] Speckle pattern can be considered a complex image due to the difficulty in describing it mathematically. 48 Thus, fractal approaches can be appropriate in the study of the behavior of a chaotic system such as speckle pattern.…”

“…Actually, among many methods used to extract information from images of any kind, and in particular medical images, fractal methods are efficient candidates. [30][31][32][33][34] The flexibility, generality, and robustness of these methods make them adaptable to the treatment of real and complex signals. Of the fractal methods, fractional Brownian motion is commonly used.…”
