Four Salamo-type 3d–4f hetero-bimetallic [ZnIILnIII] complexes: syntheses, crystal structures, and luminescent and magnetic properties

Abstract: A series of [ZnIILnIII] complexes (Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy) are synthesized by Salamo-type ligand H2L. Only [ZnIISmIII] shows the characteristic transitions of Sm3+ ion, indicating the effective energy transfer between the ligand and Sm3+ ion.

“…N 2 O 2 -type chelating ligands and their metal coordination compounds have achieved considerable attention in inorganic chemistry over several decades [1][2][3], especially in the area of their potential application in catalysts [4,5], biological fields [6][7][8][9][10], electrochemical conducts [11], ion recognitions [12][13][14][15][16], supramolecular architecture [17][18][19][20], as well as magnetic [21][22][23][24] and luminescence [25,26] materials. Recently, a new N 2 O 2 -type analogue, the Salamo ligand was developed [27][28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…The Salamo metal complexes are widely utilized in various fields such as industrial catalyses [18,19], biological fields [20,21], ion recognitions [22][23][24], environmental sciences [25][26][27][28], and magnetic [29,30] and luminescent materials [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Recently, a lot of researchers have tried many approaches to change the (-CH=N-(CH 2 ) n -N=CH-) instead of (-CH=N-O-(CH 2 ) n -O-N=CH-) unit in order to make the exchange reaction and hydrolysis reaction rate of the compounds greatly reduced and the balance level raised to a very great extent, so the Salamo-type compounds are more stable than the Salen-type compounds [40][41][42].…”

“…These Salamo-type multidentate ligands can self-assemble with transition metals, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and rare earth metals to form mononuclear or multinuclear 3d, 3d-s, 3d-4f coordination compounds [52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60]. Furthermore, these coordination compounds exhibit unique fluorescent and magnetic properties [61,62], anion effects [63], and ions recognitions [64,65], based on their structural characteristics. Meanwhile, supramolecular chemistry has become increasingly prominent in the coordination chemistry, for Salamo-type metal coordination compounds, supramolecular structures are formed mainly with the help of C-H···O, C-H···π or π···π interactions [66][67][68].…”
