Although functional ecology is a well-established field, our understanding of the evolutionary and ecological significance of the reproductive traits in macrofungi is still limited. Here, we reconstructed a phylogeny tree of gomphoid fungi in the narrower sense, including the species of the genera Gomphus and Turbinellus and used it to uncover the evolution of reproductive traits. Our analyses indicated that fungal fruit bodies and spores did not enlarge at a steady rate over time. Early gomphoid fungi essentially maintained their fruit body size, spore size and spore shape through the Mesozoic. In the Cenozoic, gomphoid fungi acquired significantly larger and more spherical spores by simultaneously expanding in length and width, with the fruit body size first decreasing and then enlarging. We argue that these trade-offs were driven by the effect of biological extinction and the dramatic climate changes of the Cenozoic. Gomphoid fungi initially increased in spore size and fruit body number as extinction survivors filled vacant niches. Both fruit bodies and spores eventually became larger as ecosystems saturated and competition intensified. One new species of Gomphus and nine new species of Turbinellus are described.

IntroductionBurgeoning mycorrhizal research has focused on identifying the various diverse mycorrhizal strategies of forest communities. Mounting evidence suggests that mycorrhizae play important roles in regulating forest community structure and composition. However, research into the manifestation of this influence in the seedling stage is lacking, especially in small-scale plots.MethodsOur research utilized structural equation models parameterized using data from a subtropical monsoon broad-leaved evergreen forest situated in Yunnan Province, China.ResultsWe noted that seedlings included plants that utilized both arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. More seedling plots with the relatively higher species diversity were the product of the mixed mycorrhizal strategy, meaning the coexistence of AM and EM seedlings in a small-scale plot rather than the dominance of one type of strategies. These mixed communities were primarily found on slopes and mountain ridges. The abundance of AM or EM trees indirectly affected seedling diversity by influencing the abundance of different mycorrhizal seedlings. In this case, the diversity of the mixed mycorrhizal community was also restricted by the level of leaf thickness in the community, followed by abiotic factors such as elevation, convexity, soil pH and soil available phosphorus.DiscussionThe effect of leaf thickness on mycorrhizal seedling abundance reflected the importance of water conditions in shaping seedling communities. The effect of convexity on seedling diversity also reflected the limitation of seedling communities by the distribution of humidity and heat conditions during topographic change. The results suggested that it is crucial to preserve seedling diversity via the mixed mycorrhizal strategy of communities in the subtropical forest.

The family Boletaceae primarily represents ectomycorrhizal fungi, which play an essential ecological role in forest ecosystems. Although the Boletaceae family has been subject to a relatively global and comprehensive history of work, novel species and genera are continually described. During this investigation in northern China, many specimens of boletoid fungi were collected. Based on the study of their morphology and phylogeny, four new species, Butyriboletus pseudoroseoflavus, Butyriboletus subregius, Tengioboletus subglutinosus, and Suillellus lacrymibasidiatus, are introduced. Morphological evidence and phylogenetic analyses of the single or combined dataset (ITS or 28S, rpb1, rpb2, and tef1) confirmed these to be four new species. The evidence and analyses indicated the new species’ relationships with other species within their genera. Detailed descriptions, color photographs, and line drawings are provided. The species of Butyriboletus in China were compared in detail and the worldwide keys of Tengioboletus and Suillellus were given.
