Four Brown Dwarfs in the Taurus Star-forming Region

Abstract: We have identified four brown dwarfs in the Taurus star-forming region. They were first selected from R and I CCD photometry of 2.29 square degrees obtained at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Subsequently, they were recovered in the 2MASS second incremental data release point source catalog. Low-resolution optical spectra obtained at the William Herschel telescope allow us to derive spectral types in the range M7-M9. One of the brown dwarfs has very strong Hα emission (EW=-340 Å ). It also displays Brγ emi… Show more

“…For example, Jayawardhana, Mohanty, & Basri (2002) have discovered a broad, asymmetric H line in GY5, indicative of ongoing accretion. Martín et al (2001) report emission in Br in CFHT-BDTau 4 as well as strong H . These observations extend into the BD range the well-known tendency for activity associated with youth observed in low-mass PMS stars.…”

“…K i and Na i K i and Na i lines in the optical and near-infrared are known to be systematically weaker in cluster BDs compared to the same SpT in the field (Martín, Rebolo, & Zapatero Osorio 1996;Luhman et al 1998;Béjar, Zapatero Osorio, & Rebolo 1999;Lucas et al 2001;Martín et al 2001;Gizis 2002). However, no systematic study of the gravity dependence is available, particularly of the 1.25 lm feature of K i, which is conveniently situated near the middle of the J band.…”

“…The original measurements were in the R C and I C filters for those targets reported in Kenyon & Hartmann (1995), whilst all other compiled literature studies transformed the measured photometric value into the Cousins system (Guieu et al 2007(Guieu et al , 2006Luhman 2000Luhman , 2004Luhman et al 2003a;Briceño et al 1999Briceño et al , 2002Martín et al 2001). For targets with more than one photometric measurement, the median value was adopted.…”

“…Subsequently, wide-field optical imaging has proven effective in uncovering members at substellar masses and across wide areas of the region (Briceño et al 1998;Martín et al 2001), particularly when combined with near-IR photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS; Luhman 2000; Briceño et al 2002;Luhman et al 2003a). Additional brown dwarfs in Taurus have been identified through observations of the multiple system GG Tau (White et al 1999) and continuum sources (White & Basri 2003).…”
