New Brown Dwarfs and an Updated Initial Mass Function in Taurus

Abstract: By combining infrared photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey with new optical imaging and spectroscopy, I have performed a search for young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in two regions encompassing a total area of 4 deg 2 in the Taurus star-forming region ( $ 1 Myr). From this work I have discovered 15 new members of Taurus. In addition, I present seven new members outside of these areas from the initial stage of a survey of all of Taurus. These 22 objects exhibit spectral types of M4.5-M9.25 and mass… Show more

“…More quantitatively, we can calculate the number of brown dwarf to stars, defined been found in other 1-2 Myr old clusters (0.13 in IC 348, 0.18 in Taurus, 0.26 in Cha I, and 0.44 in NGC 1333, Luhman et al 2003b;Luhman 2004bLuhman , 2007Scholz et al 2012, respectively). However, this ratio is highly dependent on the accuracy of the spectral classification at the substellar limit.…”

“…Photoionizing radiation from massive OB stars might contribute by removing much of the envelope and disk of a low-mass protostar (Hester et al 1996;Kroupa & Bouvier 2003a;Whitworth & Zinnecker 2004). Alternatively, turbulent compression and fragmentation of gas in a molecular cloud produces collapsing cores over a wide range of masses (Padoan & Nordlund 2002, 2004Hennebelle & Chabrier 2008;Elmegreen 2011). VLMSs and BDs then arise from the smallest cores.…”

“…Taurus exhibits a paucity of high-mass young stars (Kenyon et al 2008) and was originally proposed to be deficient in low-mass stars (Briceño et al 2002) as well. Many brown dwarfs have however since been discovered (Luhman 2004;Guieu et al 2006). Kroupa et al (2003) and Thies & Kroupa (2008) show that there is no need to invoke a non-canonical IMF in Taurus.…”

“…The original measurements were in the R C and I C filters for those targets reported in Kenyon & Hartmann (1995), whilst all other compiled literature studies transformed the measured photometric value into the Cousins system (Guieu et al 2007(Guieu et al , 2006Luhman 2000Luhman , 2004Luhman et al 2003a;Briceño et al 1999Briceño et al , 2002Martín et al 2001). For targets with more than one photometric measurement, the median value was adopted.…”
