Fouling and its effect on the thermal performance of heat exchanger tubes

Abstract: The phenomena of fouling and corrosion in heat exchanger tubes commonly encountered in industrial practice are reviewed in two phases. In the first phase, the influence of physical and chemical properties of petroleum crude on scaling and fouling are reviewed. Further, in the second phase a generalized hypothesis is provided for unsteady analysis as function of time with the aid of logarithmic, exponential and Power law variation of fouling factors with time. The time dependent thermal characteristics of typic… Show more

“…With the growth of pressure, the local peak showed a decreasing trend, and ceased to exist once the pressure reached 31MPa. Figure 9 is a 3D diagram of the correlations of thermal conductivity with temperature (375 0 C~390 0 C) and pressure (32MPa~35MPa) [7]. Overall, the thermal conductivity is negatively correlated with the temperature, and positively with the pressure.…”

“…• Cooler #1 outlet water temperature exceeded 315 K, which almost duplicates fouling on the water-side [4,6,25]. This trend was less noticeable in cooler #2, where only 1.67% of the measurements exceeded such temperature.…”

“…Heat exchangers are inevitable devices that are being employed in various home appliances and industries. But conventional configurations of heat exchanging devices are no longer dominant for transferring heat between hot and cold streams and fouling is also common phenomena which effects the rate of heat transfers through the tubes of the heat exchanger . Hence, design improvements in the configurations of heat exchangers are necessary to obtain compact configurations and process intensification in modern heat exchangers.…”

Boothroyd 2 proposed the countercurrent spirally arranged ducts which enables larger areas for heat exchanges in a small volume.…”
